Apple iPhone 16 Series to Introduce New Borderless Technology for Slimmer Bezels

The upcoming iPhone 16 series might feature even slimmer bezels, thanks to a new Border Reduction Structure (BRS) technology. Aiming to minimize the bottom bezels for all four upcoming models, BRS achieves impossible proportions by utilizing copper wires that are rolled up underneath the panel.

Samsung Display, BOE, and LG Display, the suppliers of the iPhone 16 series panels, have reportedly acquired this technology. The report comes from a Korean source, Sisa Journal. They claim that the production yield rate will be a critical factor influencing the display’s mass adoption.

While the regular iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus are to retain the same size and type of panel as their predecessors, slight increases in display size are anticipated for the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max. Market research by Omdia suggests a 6.3-inch display for the iPhone 16 Pro and a 6.9-inch display for the iPhone 16 Pro Max.

Omdia is a global analyst and advisory firm that assesses the market for emerging trends. According to them, these larger panels will utilize LTPO technology, similar to last year's Pro models, offering enhanced performance. However, rumors of under-display technology (UDC) on Apple's iPhone 16 models to conceal sensors from Dynamic Island may not materialize this year.

Kang Min-soo, a senior researcher at Omdia, suggests that Apple's efforts in this direction might face delays, possibly extending until 2027. As the excitement builds for the iPhone 16 series, consumers eagerly await the unveiling of Apple's latest BRS-imbued panels, larger screen sizes, sleeker builds, and more immersive displays.
